This week I was in the room with President Joe Biden when he visited Virginia Beach. President Biden was in town to talk about the importance of Healthcare for all Americans. The only person to speak other than the President was a middle-class white Virginia Beach native who discussed her family’s health care challenges. She talked about how her family’s coverage under the Affordable Care Act literally saved their lives after they lost their jobs and got sick. Following her brief words, she introduced the President of the United States, which she said was the proudest moment of her life. I understood her statement very well and knew it was a privilege to be there too. So, I decided to personally dedicate my attendance to honor my deceased sister, Gerri Hall, who served the DNC in Flint Michigan for all of her adult life. I think Gerri would’ve been thrilled to know that I was one of the 500 people in that room with President Biden. I will cherish that time forever. President Biden 30-minute talk outlined his Healthcare plan. A lot of what he said resonated with me, but I will leave you with the President’s words – he said, “When I introduce my budget, you’ll see that it’s going to invest in America, lower health costs and protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare while cutting the deficit more than $2 trillion over the next 10 years,” but, by the way, I want to make it clear I’m going to raise some taxes. Many of you are billionaires out there. You’re going to stop paying at 3%. Not a joke.”
Words on the weekend weather: Depending on where you live forecasters are predicting more severe snowstorms in California, rain and a mix of snow for parts of the Midwest on Saturday and snow for the East Coast through Sunday. Stay safe.
More next week, on upcoming book talks on The Overlooked voices of Hurricane Katrina: Mississippi Black Women Survivors Resilience and Recovery.
