This month my family experienced the transition of my older sister Gerri. Back in 2011 when she had her 1st MD diagnosis, her son, reminded me of my visit to take care of her that summer and she started the journey to fight back. Gerri fought like a soldier and lived her life until God called her home on Saturday, 5/14.
But, between her dash Gerri did a LOT of good in our family and the world. My college friends reminded me of how I talked about her as a pioneering college educated Black women leader working at a Fortune 500 company in the 70s & 80s.
In her Flint community and Michigan, she mentored cousins, supported thousands of young activists and seasoned politicians. She was honored by the Genesee County Congressional Democratic Party for her service in Flint. I remember how proud I was of her when she sent photos of her work as President of the Flint Black Caucus and key roles in the Michigan Democratic Party.
We will love and miss Gerri forever, but we know that Heaven has another ANGEL who is walking around heaven all day “healthy” and still doing her part just like she did when she was with us for 70 years. ♥ &👏🏼
What a beautiful tribute. It comes from the heart as well as help those that didn’t know Gerri understand the person she was and her fight. She will be missed by many. Thanks for sharing. I know first hand the loss you are feeling right now. I loss my younger sister October 20,, 2020. I am now experiencing the loss of my childhood friend’s sister. I grieve with you my dear friend. Just know that Gerri has paid her dues. We are still in the red. Our dues must be paid in full. Praying for you and your family constantly.
